1900-1910 White cotton blouse.

The blouse mounted

Description

The cotton fabric has a woven self pattern of rings and spots arranged in vertical zig-zag stripes.

The blouse fronts are gathered into the collar band for 2" each side of the front edges. A set of seven tucks, ⅛" wide and about ⅜" apart, runs horizontally across each front, 2½" down from the neck. A band, 2¼" wide, has two sets of three of these tucks sewn diagonally across going over another three on the opposite diagonal to form crosses; the centre of the top one is 3½" from the neck and the second is 4½" lower. The band is backed on plain cotton and this is sewn to the edge of the right front; the edges are unattached, and there are no fastenings down the front.

The collar band is slightly curved and 1⅝" deep at the centre back, narrowing a little at the front where the edges slope back, and it is lined with plain cotton. A buttonhole in each end is for a collar stud to attach a separate collar, probably stiffly starched, which would be attached at the centre back where there is a pearl button, replacing the need for a back collar stud.

The back is gathered into a yoke, which is 4⅜" deep at the centre and lined with plain cotton.

A set of seven of the tucks runs round the top of each sleeve, to line up with the tucks on the fronts, and the sleeve heads are gathered into the shoulders. The lower ends are gathered into cuffs, 2½" deep and lined with plain cotton; they are fastened with two pearl buttons. The sleeve seams are open at the ends for 3¼" on the right and 5¼" on the left.

The blouse has been heavily starched, and a modern piece of tape has been tied round the waist for the photograph to show how it would look when tucked into a skirt. There is a tear about 1" above the hem at the back.
