Description
The coat is in black wool facecloth.
It has been re-lined with black rayon taffeta.
The 7″ deep collar is covered with pale grey chinchilla, which goes over the edges of the wool. The chinchilla is a South American rodent with very dense fur.
The coat is fastened with one large button at hip level on the left front and a bound buttonhole on the right front. It can also be fastened at the neck pulling the collar round; there is a button 4" in from the top of the left front edge and a thread loop on right front edge. There is also a thread loop on left front edge 18" up from the hem probably for a button on the inside, now missing, inside to secure left front in place.
A 6½" deep band of chinchilla goes round the hem, and the ends of the sleeves have 3¼" deep chinchilla cuffs
Above the chinchilla band on the skirt there is a large motif on the front and the back, 18" high; the design is of large drop shapes outlined in pleated ⅞" wide black ribbon surrounded with leafy patterns embroidered in black silk and silver filé. A similar embroidered decoration, 7" high, is on the sleeves above the chinchilla cuffs.
The coat came from the family of Miss Weston, in Lewes, Sussex.
