Description
The hat is made of a crescent of green felt sewn to the back section with a piped seam; it is 4¾" wide at the centre front. The front edge is turned in and top-stitched on to the paler green petersham ribbon, ⅞" wide, which goes round the inside.
The top has a rosette each side made of a strip of the felt, 1⅞" wide, pleated and coiled in a spiral, and there is a bow motif at the centre back made from a piece of the felt, 6" long and 2¼" wide, its centre pinched in by a ½" wide strip. Felt hats often had self trimmings at this time, maybe to make the most of the available material when everything was scarce during the second World War; for some reason hats themselves were not rationed.
