Description
The cotton is quite heavy and in a weft faced twill weave.
The trousers have a fall front, 6" deep, 4½" wide at the top widening to 5¾" at the bottom; it has buttonholes in each top corner for bone buttons on the waistband and is lined with linen. The crotch seam up the middle of the fall has a ⅞" long opening ⅜" from the top forming another buttonhole over the centre waistband button, but this shows no sign of having been used. The waistband is 3" wide at the front narrowing to 2⅜" at the sides and 1⅜" at the back. There are two buttons and buttonholes at the waistband centre front opening and two more further down on pieces of the cotton added under the fall which slope away to the sides at the base.
The watch pocket to the right of centre front has a welted top, 3" long and ¾" wide; the pocket itself is 6" deep. The pockets at the sides are accessed by flaps at the top of the fronts which overlap the waistband by ½" near the centre, and are 5¾" open along the tops and 3½" down the sides; they have buttonholes at the corners for bone buttons on the waistband.
There is a bone button each side on the front of the waistband and one each side at the back, for braces to be attached.
The centre back has an inserted triangular piece, 4¾" wide at the top and 8" deep. The top edge of this is unfinished and is ¾" higher than the waistband. It allows adjustment to the size of the waist with lacing through a pair of worked eyelets each side in the waistband; the lace is missing.
The ends of the legs have a 2" opening in the outside seam and the fronts are about ¼" longer than the backs.
The trousers are discoloured and stained in places.
