Description
This is a cape with shaped seams at the side fronts for the arms.
It is lined with cream silk twill quilted in a lattice pattern with wool wadding underneath, and this is quite worn and disintegrating in places; the scale of the lattice pattern in the back is twice the size of that in the fronts.
There are ten hooks and eyes down the front, placed alternately which makes the fastening more secure, and the stand collar, 1¾" high, has two hooks and eyes.
All the edges and the collar are trimmed with wine petersham ribbon, 1¾" wide, which has strands of chenille along each edge, 3¼" long, with three bulges down them, forming a thick fringe.
There are three sets of toggles joined by silk cord loops down the front, 6" down from the neck, 6½" further down and another 6½" down; only the left side toggle remains of the lowest set.
An inset panel in the back skirt, 13½" wide at its hem, is gathered into a point at the waist and gives fullness at the back. Above this is a large motif of wine braid and gimp forming loops, with three 6" long tassels of the chenille strands hanging from its lowest edge.
Inside the left front there is a pocket, 11" up from the hem and 4" wide; the curved edge is piped and has the cream silk twill tightly pleated along the top, ¾" wide.
